featuring Beth Bozman,
former Duke University Head Coach,
member of the NFHCA Hall of Fame (2008),
led Duke to four consecutive Final Fours from 2003-06,
finishing as the national runner-up in three of those occasions (2003-05),
has over 300 career victories!

Step onto the field with this All-Access inside look into Beth Bozman's Duke Field Hockey Team as she welcomes you to a series of three practices where you get to see all the workings of a championship program. The emphasis and activities of each practice change as the team work's their way through the week and comes closer to a weekend of games.

In the first practice, Bozman's team has just come off two games over the weekend followed by a off-day, so Bozman leads them through a more vigorous practice aimed at conditioning and skill work. Jeff Houser, the speed and agility coach at Duke (and a former Olympian), starts the practice with an anerobic threshold conditioning workout, which builds up the players' staminia.

Next, Bozman switches to skill work, running a 3-station ball support drill, passing, and shooting drills that incorporate a ball lift to develop soft hands on the receiving end before the shot. Moving to defense, Bozman runs a defense drill that reinforces pushing the attacker to the hash marks, which will give the defense a chance to recover and organize. The drill starts 1v1, then moves to 2v2 allowing the defense to work on reading the lead attack player. You will hear Bozman pass along coaching tips and strategies for the defense, as well as for the offense that will lead to corner opportunities.

Bozman runs a 3v2 No Touch game reinforcing tracking skills and getting to the low defender as quick as possible. The goal is to develop sharp passing combinations to isolate the defense and create more 2-on-1 situations in games.

A skeleton passing drill closes practice. This drill sharpens cutting patterns and ball pace.

In the second practice, the team is led through more team drills that incorporate game play into the practice. This prepares the players for games both physically and mentally. The practice features drills for ball movement, circle defense and the press.

Day two's passing and shooting skill work includes a 5-Man Passing drill that focuses on backing away, covering passing lanes and scoring when the numbers are in your favor. A weave and shoot drill works on spacing and getting a number of shots in a short amount of time.

Moving on to defense, Bozman runs a defense and recovery drill that will help your defense slow down the attack in the circle and, by using the body, defend a space that will force the attack outside.

Bozman shows her Fall Away Press, where you will see the importance of moving on the front end of the pass, so that you don't lose your chance to step up and press.

Bozman's third practice is the final practice before departing for games. She lowers the intensity and places the emphasis on preparing for the upcoming games. Drills during this practice are specifically tailored to mimic schemes that opponents run so Bozman's squad is prepared to face them on game day.

Grid passing helps with fading off the pass, using soft hands and keeping the passes flat. Warm-up shooting, redirection passing, long hit and skeleton passing keying on fakes are a sampling of the skills that Bozman drills.

With this inside look into Duke Field Hockey, you will be able to prepare your team for games like Hall of Fame Coach Beth Bozman does!

These practices were conducted following the opening week of the season, which will give you a good feel for how to structure the opening prcatices of your season.

Harvard University Head Coach;
former University of Maryland Technical Director/Coach;
2011 & 2010 Back-to-Back National Champions;

Helped lead Maryland to four national championships in five years (2005-10); USA Men's National team assistant coach (2009 Pan American Games silver medalists), Coached current World and Olympic Champions during his tenure in the Netherlands; owner and co-founder of World Camp USA.

National championship coach Tjerk van Herwaarden demonstrates more than 10 simple exercises that focus on improving the power, accuracy and quickness of your shot.

van Herwaarden teaches effective scoring skills that can be used in a variety of game situations:

  • Shooting off of a move
  • Shooting off of a pass while facing the goal
  • Shooting off of a pass with your back to the goal
  • One touch scoring
  • Scoring close to the goal

Starting at the top of the circle, van Herwaarden focuses demonstrates how to execute the basic shot and the reverse shot. The reverse shot is an important skill for every player as it is difficult for the keeper to track and makes it difficult to defend the attacker. Another area of focus in these drills is the ability to take the ball away from the defense to create space for a shot.

Since a majority of the goals scored in field hockey happen close to the goal, van Herwaarden demonstrates a number of combination scoring drills to fine tune your one touch scoring skills. These drills work on scoring with limited time and space, rebound shots with no back swing, shots off deflections and more.

Throughout the DVD, van Herwaarden demonstrates how to correct the common errors that rob your players of power and accuracy on their shots.

These proven drills are done regularly in Maryland's practices leading to four trips to the NCAA finals in five years. Incorporate them into your practice today!

with Jan Trapp,
Messiah College Head Coach; over 500 career victories;
2010 NCAA Division III National runner-up; 10x MAC Conference Coach of the Year;
Featuring the Messiah College Coaching Staff

Jan Trapp and the Messiah College staff take you through the techniques and drills for teaching and developing proper stick work. Coach Trapp has won over 500 games in her career at Messiah and her teams have been invited to the NCAA tournament over 20 times with 14 of those teams reaching the Final Four.

Coach Trapp's drills begin with basic principles and build up to more advanced principles. The DVD begins with stationary stick work drills involving the ready position concentrating on footwork and balance - the keys to good stickwork.

Trapp slowly adds movement to the drills combining ball handling, footwork, passing with spin, slip, flop, pull back and lift techniques. The progression ends with shots out of the movements. Each drill trains the players to keep their body and sticks low to ensure consistent ball control. These drills will help your athletes build speed and quickness while carrying the ball down the field and to put more drive behind their shot.

Building on the ball control drills, the staff demonstrates drills to improve passing and receiving skills while on the move. This segment includes a 2-on-0 drill to develop ball control, passing and receiving skills and a five-point drill for receiving passes on the move from a longer distance. These drills reinforce low body position, soft hands, passing accuracy and timing. Using these drills, your players will learn to cut to get open and receive a pass with pressure or get practice intercepting passes.

All of the skills taught throughout the video culminate in a 3-on-2, 2-on-1 drill that simulates game action.

This comprehensive DVD will provide you with the tools you need to bring out the best in your athletes' ball control skills!

9x ACC Champions (1992, 1998-2001, 2005, 2008-2010), 51 NCAA All-Americans

Peak athletic performance often decides the success of your team. Barry Kagan covers everything in this video on how to maximize speed output, agility work, conditioning your athletes for game-time, and the importance of recovery to your workouts. When the overall commitment by the athletes is made, the outcome is evident once they step on the field.

Training Plan
Coach Kagan discusses how he and the Maryland Coaching Staff plan out the training protocol for the upcoming season. All workouts done throughout the year complement each other; speed workouts, agility drills and strength training are all included and revolve around the underlying component of maintaining proper conditioning. From post-season workouts, to spring training, and in-season workouts, Kagan describes in length of what is expected during each period of training including rep ranges, frequency of strength training sessions and how often players should be running.

Dynamic & Pre-Game Warm-Ups
Whereas most warm-up plans consist of long periods of time, Kagan's plan is really brief with the focus on getting the body warmed up and ready for the game. Long periods of stretching and warm-up drills can often extend the length of a game being counterproductive to what the goal at hand is. In the drills and stretches included, players are able to be completely ready for peak performance at a much faster rate than before.

Speed & Agility Training
Speed training is based on the two mechanisms of strike frequency and stride length. Strike frequency is how quickly the nervous system can fire and how quickly you can drive yourself to the desired outcome. While stride length is more of strength and production you put on each movement. Kagan covers how to use those mechanisms in seven specific speed drills as well as 18 agility drills designed to maximize your training sessions. These drills include sport specificity to enhance player morale during periods of strenuous drills.

Conditioning
The goal for athletes is to play at high intensity for extended periods of time. While conditioning is usually only related to the aspect of being able to run, you must be able to prepare athletes to not become injured. Running drills are usually kept short in duration and require change of pace while alternating intensity to mimic the strain of a full game.

Build your team's defense with Tina McDavitt's proven-successful strategies and drills. In this video Coach McDavitt shares the defensive strategies she uses for her team and the drills she uses to develop her players and to effectively implement her defensive strategy.

Coach McDavitt teaches and demonstrates:

  • Defensive Strategies using Diamond and Triangle Defense. The Diamond Defense is difficult for attackers to penetrate, as the defending team is covering most angles.
  • The importance of getting numbers behind the ball. When under attack, your team must gain possession. You can do so by dropping back and helping defenders to win the ball.
  • Drills to force attackers toward less dangerous space and to tackle the ball carrier.
  • When to mark man-to-man vs zonal defense and when to use a combination of the two.
McDavitt gives a detailed explanation of each drill utilizing marker board diagrams and on-field demonstrations.

The tactics and strategies she describes are very effective, and can be used by coaches for their college, club or a mature high school team. In addition, players can use this video to understand the team and individual defensive skills needed to be successful.

Strategy can only be effective if the players have good basic skills, so McDavitt covers the fundamental skills and how every defender can practice.

These drills and strategies will give your team the tools to create a stingy, `hard-to-penetrate' defense!
