featuring Beth Bozman,
former Duke University Head Coach,
member of the NFHCA Hall of Fame (2008),
led Duke to four consecutive Final Fours from 2003-06,
finishing as the national runner-up in three of those occasions (2003-05),
has over 300 career victories!

Step onto the field with this All-Access inside look into Beth Bozman's Duke Field Hockey Team as she welcomes you to a series of three practices where you get to see all the workings of a championship program. The emphasis and activities of each practice change as the team work's their way through the week and comes closer to a weekend of games.

In the first practice, Bozman's team has just come off two games over the weekend followed by a off-day, so Bozman leads them through a more vigorous practice aimed at conditioning and skill work. Jeff Houser, the speed and agility coach at Duke (and a former Olympian), starts the practice with an anerobic threshold conditioning workout, which builds up the players' staminia.

Next, Bozman switches to skill work, running a 3-station ball support drill, passing, and shooting drills that incorporate a ball lift to develop soft hands on the receiving end before the shot. Moving to defense, Bozman runs a defense drill that reinforces pushing the attacker to the hash marks, which will give the defense a chance to recover and organize. The drill starts 1v1, then moves to 2v2 allowing the defense to work on reading the lead attack player. You will hear Bozman pass along coaching tips and strategies for the defense, as well as for the offense that will lead to corner opportunities.

Bozman runs a 3v2 No Touch game reinforcing tracking skills and getting to the low defender as quick as possible. The goal is to develop sharp passing combinations to isolate the defense and create more 2-on-1 situations in games.

A skeleton passing drill closes practice. This drill sharpens cutting patterns and ball pace.

In the second practice, the team is led through more team drills that incorporate game play into the practice. This prepares the players for games both physically and mentally. The practice features drills for ball movement, circle defense and the press.

Day two's passing and shooting skill work includes a 5-Man Passing drill that focuses on backing away, covering passing lanes and scoring when the numbers are in your favor. A weave and shoot drill works on spacing and getting a number of shots in a short amount of time.

Moving on to defense, Bozman runs a defense and recovery drill that will help your defense slow down the attack in the circle and, by using the body, defend a space that will force the attack outside.

Bozman shows her Fall Away Press, where you will see the importance of moving on the front end of the pass, so that you don't lose your chance to step up and press.

Bozman's third practice is the final practice before departing for games. She lowers the intensity and places the emphasis on preparing for the upcoming games. Drills during this practice are specifically tailored to mimic schemes that opponents run so Bozman's squad is prepared to face them on game day.

Grid passing helps with fading off the pass, using soft hands and keeping the passes flat. Warm-up shooting, redirection passing, long hit and skeleton passing keying on fakes are a sampling of the skills that Bozman drills.

With this inside look into Duke Field Hockey, you will be able to prepare your team for games like Hall of Fame Coach Beth Bozman does!

These practices were conducted following the opening week of the season, which will give you a good feel for how to structure the opening prcatices of your season.

with Tjerk Van Herwaarden,
Harvard University Head Coach;
former University of Maryland Technical Director/Coach;
2011 & 2010 Back-to-Back National Champions;

Helped lead Maryland to four national championships in five years (2005-10); USA Men's National team assistant coach (2009 Pan American Games silver medalists), Coached current World and Olympic Champions during his tenure in the Netherlands; owner and co-founder of World Camp USA.

National championship coach Tjerk van Herwaarden demonstrates more than 10 simple exercises that focus on improving the power, accuracy and quickness of your shot.

van Herwaarden teaches effective scoring skills that can be used in a variety of game situations:

  • Shooting off of a move
  • Shooting off of a pass while facing the goal
  • Shooting off of a pass with your back to the goal
  • One touch scoring
  • Scoring close to the goal

Starting at the top of the circle, van Herwaarden focuses demonstrates how to execute the basic shot and the reverse shot. The reverse shot is an important skill for every player as it is difficult for the keeper to track and makes it difficult to defend the attacker. Another area of focus in these drills is the ability to take the ball away from the defense to create space for a shot.

Since a majority of the goals scored in field hockey happen close to the goal, van Herwaarden demonstrates a number of combination scoring drills to fine tune your one touch scoring skills. These drills work on scoring with limited time and space, rebound shots with no back swing, shots off deflections and more.

Throughout the DVD, van Herwaarden demonstrates how to correct the common errors that rob your players of power and accuracy on their shots.

These proven drills are done regularly in Maryland's practices leading to four trips to the NCAA finals in five years. Incorporate them into your practice today!

with Jan Trapp,
Messiah College Head Coach; over 500 career victories;
2010 NCAA Division III National runner-up; 10x MAC Conference Coach of the Year;
Featuring the Messiah College Coaching Staff

Jan Trapp and the Messiah College staff take you through the techniques and drills for teaching and developing proper stick work. Coach Trapp has won over 500 games in her career at Messiah and her teams have been invited to the NCAA tournament over 20 times with 14 of those teams reaching the Final Four.

Coach Trapp's drills begin with basic principles and build up to more advanced principles. The DVD begins with stationary stick work drills involving the ready position concentrating on footwork and balance - the keys to good stickwork.

Trapp slowly adds movement to the drills combining ball handling, footwork, passing with spin, slip, flop, pull back and lift techniques. The progression ends with shots out of the movements. Each drill trains the players to keep their body and sticks low to ensure consistent ball control. These drills will help your athletes build speed and quickness while carrying the ball down the field and to put more drive behind their shot.

Building on the ball control drills, the staff demonstrates drills to improve passing and receiving skills while on the move. This segment includes a 2-on-0 drill to develop ball control, passing and receiving skills and a five-point drill for receiving passes on the move from a longer distance. These drills reinforce low body position, soft hands, passing accuracy and timing. Using these drills, your players will learn to cut to get open and receive a pass with pressure or get practice intercepting passes.

All of the skills taught throughout the video culminate in a 3-on-2, 2-on-1 drill that simulates game action.

This comprehensive DVD will provide you with the tools you need to bring out the best in your athletes' ball control skills!

Tackling Drills, Techniques & Strategies for Field Hockey

with Shiv Jagday, FIH accredited coach;
former Canadian and USA national team coach, coaching national teams in the Olympic Games, World Cups and the Pan Am Games

Former Canadian and USA National Team coach Shiv Jagday shows how to develop tackling skills and how to efficiently critique and identify areas of improvement. From his perspective, tackling is position- and field-location specific; one technique does not suit every situation.

In this video you will learn multiple tackling techniques and the best field position for each tackle.

Training for proper tackling starts with being aware of what side of the field you're on and where you want to force the ball. Therefore, an important part of training includes dividing and identifying the different parts of the field. Coach Jagday demonstrates how dividing the field makes it easier for players to understand the best tackle to use.

Jagday shares drills that efficiently teach players and coaches alike the correlation between stance and the various types of tackles. Shadow dancing and footwork drills - with and without the ball - help players develop these important fundamental skills. The defensive stance must allow the player to recover quickly from their tackling efforts.

Once players understand the connection between the tackle they use and the specific part of the field they're on, practice progresses to 1-on-1, 2-on-1 and 3-on-1 drills that better reflect game-like conditions. Coach Jagday explains how tackling is more than simply taking the ball away from the offense. Tackling strategies include tactics, planned footwork, close shadowing of the ball handler, timing, shifting your hands and grip as well as channeling the ball away from the areas of greatest threat.

Knowing precisely when to tackle or when to commit is probably more important than knowing how to tackle.

This presentation will strengthen the tackling skills of more experienced players and lay a strong foundation for new players. Coach Jagday gives coaches the insight to efficiently correct and improve their players.

with Shiv Jagday, FIH accredited coach;
former Canadian and USA national team coach, coaching national teams in the Olympic Games, World Cups and the Pan Am Games

Improve your team's competitiveness using first touch techniques from former Canadian and USA national team coach Shiv Jagday. You'll learn how to control the ball and force defenders to react to your actions instead of influencing them.

An effective "first touch" of the ball often times ensures successful passing and receiving, ball movement, advancement of the ball and success when facing the defense.

Coach Jagday spends minimal time on individual drills, preferring to work on improving first touch skills within game-like situations. He expertly divides the field and player positions into interlocking, triangular groups of three. From this format, players practice passing and receiving, and build plays for moving the ball down field. As players progress, Jagday increases the space between players thereby challenging their ability and better simulating game situations.

After covering the basics, Coach Jagday discusses how to receive a pass under pressure and draw or entice a defender, then make a pass to the overlapping teammate within the appropriate triangle of players. He demonstrates how focusing on individual technique and delaying a pass, allows the receiver to adjust the leading angles and prepares them to make the next positive move.

The best field hockey players in the world use their first touch to create time and space and to place the defender at a disadvantage. Coach Jagday's first touch techniques and his strategy for dividing the playing field will improve your team's first touch skills and ultimately their level of competitiveness.

9x ACC Champions (1992, 1998-2001, 2005, 2008-2010), 51 NCAA All-Americans

With the rapid increase of talented athletes in field hockey throughout the country, strength and conditioning development can provide a much needed competitive edge for your program.

Barry Kagan takes you through the Maryland Terrapins strength training philosophy and how he approaches a full year's training preparation. His approach keeps the equipment selection simple for the use of athlete's from the lowest of levels to the most elite.

Dynamic Warm-Ups & Flexibility
Properly preparing your athletes for the workout that is about to ensue is as important as the training itself. Kagan begins the Dynamic Flexibility and Plyometric portion of the workout with a variety of ladder drills and numerous dynamic flexibility movements. He has the players demonstrate innovative exercises in which he has specifically created for the benefit of their overall athletic ability or injury prevention.

Lower-Body Strength Training
Leg strength is paramount to the success of any athlete and with proper training technique and work ethic; players can dynamically change their game. With over 24 specific lower-body strength training exercises you will be able to ensure proper development of athletes of any experience level. With more than seven different variations of the standard squat you will be not able to only work on their leg-strength, but also simultaneously work on core stabilization and explosiveness.

Olympic Lifts
The inclusion of the Olympic lifts work on the triple extension of the lower body: the hips, the knees, and the ankles. These exercises force the body to become explosive in nature and properly translate power throughout their body. From Power Cleans, to Snatch variations, to Push Presses, Kagan covers the technique and proper rep ranges to effectively utilize your body's full potential.

Upper-Body Strength Training
No training program is complete without working the upper-body. Kagan covers both pushing and pulling movements to round out the complete workout. He covers exercises such as the Bench Press and Barbell Rows along with the proper form that should be executed to ensure proper utilization. Also discussed is the implementation of single-armed exercises and how they are able to benefit your body by taxing the nervous system and increasing your core stabilization.

The Maryland Terrapins have had tremendous success in the history of their program. Order this DVD today and see how they properly train their athletes to peak athletic performance for the season!

Peak athletic performance often decides the success of your team. Barry Kagan covers everything in this video on how to maximize speed output, agility work, conditioning your athletes for game-time, and the importance of recovery to your workouts. When the overall commitment by the athletes is made, the outcome is evident once they step on the field.

Training Plan
Coach Kagan discusses how he and the Maryland Coaching Staff plan out the training protocol for the upcoming season. All workouts done throughout the year complement each other; speed workouts, agility drills and strength training are all included and revolve around the underlying component of maintaining proper conditioning. From post-season workouts, to spring training, and in-season workouts, Kagan describes in length of what is expected during each period of training including rep ranges, frequency of strength training sessions and how often players should be running.

Dynamic & Pre-Game Warm-Ups
Whereas most warm-up plans consist of long periods of time, Kagan's plan is really brief with the focus on getting the body warmed up and ready for the game. Long periods of stretching and warm-up drills can often extend the length of a game being counterproductive to what the goal at hand is. In the drills and stretches included, players are able to be completely ready for peak performance at a much faster rate than before.

Speed & Agility Training
Speed training is based on the two mechanisms of strike frequency and stride length. Strike frequency is how quickly the nervous system can fire and how quickly you can drive yourself to the desired outcome. While stride length is more of strength and production you put on each movement. Kagan covers how to use those mechanisms in seven specific speed drills as well as 18 agility drills designed to maximize your training sessions. These drills include sport specificity to enhance player morale during periods of strenuous drills.

Conditioning
The goal for athletes is to play at high intensity for extended periods of time. While conditioning is usually only related to the aspect of being able to run, you must be able to prepare athletes to not become injured. Running drills are usually kept short in duration and require change of pace while alternating intensity to mimic the strain of a full game.

The Maryland Terrapins have had tremendous success in the history of their program. Order this DVD today and see how they properly train their athletes to peak athletic performance for the season!

FHD-04388A: with Pam Bustin, Duke University Head Coach;
2011 ACC Coach of the Year; 2011 Womensfieldhockey.com National Coach of the Year;
Assistant Coach for the United States National Under 19 Team; former Assistant Coach for the U.S. National Team at the 2008 Olympics; former University of Louisville Head Coach; 5x Big East/MAC Champions; 3x Big East/MAC Coach of the Year

In this presentation from Duke University's Pam Bustin, you'll learn how to better prepare your players and challenge their basic skills through the following drills, techniques and strategies:

  • Flow Drill - passing the ball from various points on the field
  • Influencing play through the "1v1 Defensive Technique"
  • "Shots, Rebounds and Deflections" ball control through passing and receiving techniques
  • Offensive progressions / Defensive progressions
  • 1v1 and 2v2 strategies

Practice begins with a six-position Flow Drill that works on various shooting and passing techniques from around the field. The drill is designed to make the passer increasingly aware of the receiver's location as well as their direction of movement. The exercise challenges the fundamentals of redirecting passes, staying down on the play, stick work and footwork. Coach Bustin concludes by critiquing the action of the players, reinforcing the strategy she's trying to encourage and soliciting player feedback. .

The "1v1 Defensive Technique" section concentrates on the defender's skill at delaying and influencing the play through careful defensive techniques. Coach Bustin shows how to challenge offensive players with simple tips like closing quickly and breaking down when you trap, keeping your feet under your hips, running to close and using a drop [step] to get under the ball carrier.

Using two players attacking the goal, the "Shots, Rebounds and Deflections Drill" shows how to position offensive players to receive passes, intercept rebounds and score with deflections from passes that originate from higher on the field. Focusing on play within the circle, this drill encourages increased movement in an effort to make something happen in front of the goal. Though it focuses on offensive movement, the defense also benefits from the challenge of defending against an offensive with an advantageous field position.

Coach Bustin shares a variety of drills designed to build upon foundational skills and prepare players for game situations. Game-speed shooting drills give both offensive and defensive players with the opportunity to focus on their fundamental skills and challenge each other to a higher level of performance.

Assistant Coach for the United States National Under 19 Team; former Assistant Coach for the U.S. National Team at the 2008 Olympics; former University of Louisville Head Coach; 5x Big East/MAC Champions; 3x Big East/MAC Coach of the Year

Duke University's Pam Bustin shows you a competitive small-games practice that effectively isolates specific skills for players to develop under game conditions. Through small-games competition you'll learn how to challenge players' fundamental skills using the following competitive drills:

  • 4-Goal Game
  • 3v3 Diagonal Attacking
  • 3v3 Diagonal Defending
  • 3v3 Half-Court
  • 6v4 Continuous

The 4-Goal Game forces players to quickly develop attack and defense awareness by limiting the playing area. Developing each player's vision is at the heart of this drill. Some of the core fundamental skills that are challenged and developed in this small-game drill include passing accuracy, being able to see your target early, seeing lanes, scanning and pre-scanning for passes.

The 3v3 diagonal small-game drills are effective at creating game-speed transition tempo. Working from a 3v3 format, each team attacks a goal in front of them as well as a goal to their right. This makes each team responsible for protecting a diagonal space and attacking a diagonal space. Since the space is limited, players learn to develop the ability to quickly scan and pre-scan so that their first touch is on target. This drill improves game performance in many key areas including tracking, long hit, side-in possession, the ability to move the ball, and keeping possession and break out against a higher number of defenders.

The 3v3 half court-to-goal drill uses the goalie as well as three attack players and three defenders. One of the strengths of this drill is that it facilitates communication between the defenders and their goalie. Possession alternates between each team ensuring that the goalie communicates with each group of players, as determined by possession. Transition, tipping, goalie communication and shooting on goal are some of the key development features of this drill.

Coach Bustin's presentation concludes with a 6v4 continuous game. Using only half of the field, this drill encourages offensive possession and strategies that will help attackers see where and how be in position to tip or get the ball off the defender. The offense can keep the ball speed up in order to shift the defense and create opportunities.

Coach Bustin has done an outstanding job creating exercises that will challenge and build players skills at any level of field hockey.

FHD-04389A: with Ainslee Lamb, Boston College Head Coach;
has served as the head coach for the U.S. National Team at the U17, U19 and U21 levels.

In this dynamic presentation, Boston College Head Coach Ainslee Lamb concentrates on the principles necessary to win 2v1 matchups. Using whiteboard explanations and on-field demonstration, Coach Lamb shares practice drills that cover the foundational skills needed to create and win 2v1 situations.

One of field hockey's most fundamental forms is the 2v1 contest. Beginning with simple ball-handling drills, Coach Lamb shares her offensive philosophy, which is built on sound foundational skills. By adding incremental progressions, she builds an aggressive offensive strategy that creates 2v1 offensive opportunities.

Coach Lamb offers a highly detailed explanation of the responsibilities of both the ball carrier and the off-ball player. She shares skills and theory that will enable offensive players to effectively exploit the 2v1 game. Beginning with basic concepts and progressing through detailed offensive strategies, your players will quickly develop into an efficient and purposed offensive team. At the heart of being able to master the 2v1 game are these three essential ball-carrier skills:

  • Know your defender's position and intentions
  • Know your teammates' position
  • Identify the "dangerous space" that you and your teammate will use against the defense

The off-ball carrier has their own set of responsibilities. The importance of communication, vision, maintaining a presence in a passing lane as well as being positioned in the "dangerous space" are some of the core concepts of this 2v1 strategy. Considerable detail is provided so that all players will be able to develop their skills and understanding of field hockey, which will enable them to make better decisions and become a formidable offensive threat.

Coach Lamb begins every drill with the offensive player engaging the defender. The defender's reaction drives the decision of the offense. By forcing the defender to react to the ball carrier, the off-ball player exploits the weakness of the defender's inability to cover two offensive players. These same basic scenarios are presented from different field positions and from different angles of attack. Through these various presentations, Coach Lamb details a great deal of offensive direction and strategy. As she guides players through these drills, she constantly reinforces proper technique and challenges players to sharpen their awareness and react to the details the defender provides-details that are often overlooked by most offensive players

Most importantly, Coach Lamb shares a philosophy that players can apply to their on-field decision-making. This video will prove to be an invaluable tool to increase both players' and coaches' "Offensive Field Hockey IQ."

has served as the head coach for the U.S. National Team at the U17, U19 and U21 levels.

In this dynamic presentation, Boston College Head Coach Ainslee Lamb shares 11 drills for developing a shooting zone philosophy that considers not only the shooter but where the ball is coming from as well. Learn how to create shooting opportunities and develop a more sophisticated offense that's harder for goalies to make plays against by getting your shooter and passer working together.

Using whiteboard explanations and on-field demonstration, Coach Lamb explains the importance of creating a shooting zone. She also defines the expectations for each athlete when they are in the shooting zone and approaching it. In addition, she shares drills that cover a variety of game-like shooting situations. In this DVD, you'll learn:

  • the importance of creating a shooting zone and the expectations of players when they're in it
  • shooting opportunities developed from deflections
  • how to train players to score off rebounds
  • how to use reverse stick, sweeps and traps to control the ball and create shooting opportunities
  • to utilize back space from defensive positions to score

Coach Lamb also covers the offensive strategies and expectations that guide the action of players when they attack from the top of circle as well as how they can execute early and develop the timing they need to be a serious offensive threat.

Listen in as players are given detailed tips to improve their shooting. Coach Lamb encourages awareness of each shooter's specific style so they can fine-tune their own development. She focuses on fundamentals like winding up to shoot the ball, adjusting footwork, creating momentum and torque and keeping the stick close to ball while preparing to shoot.

Coach Lamb provides enough detail and layers in each drill to provide value across all ages and skill levels. You'll discover something new every time you return to her DVD. By practicing the details specific to each shot and then building a progressive drill that allows the athlete to see where each shot is most effective, you get a comprehensive instructional DVD that will help players at all levels improve their shooting ability.

Two time NESCAC Coach of the Year Tina McDavitt demonstrates drills you can use to develop skilled, effective players on the offensive end of the field.

Passing, receiving, and positioning are just some of the improvement areas targeted in this DVD. Throughout the drills, Coach McDavitt shares insights into the drill and how she successfully coaches her team. These offense-based drills include defenders to pressure the offense, put players in competitive situations and to keep players busy during practice.

Coach McDavitt's drills will show you how to:

  • Move the ball quickly and accurately into the circle and eliminate mistakes in this area during matches.
  • Use overload situations in attack and stay away from less effective one-on-one situations.
  • Slow down the attack (as a defender) to let the defense catch up and help.
  • Be patient when looking to outlet and transition, teach the defenders to hold the ball or transition to the other side to create some space.
  • Teach your players to position themselves to be a positive passing option for the ball carrier
  • And more!

McDavitt shows you how to set-up and run the drills on the whiteboard, then takes her players through each drill in a full speed, live practice setting so you can see how to execute the drills and run variations of them.

This video is a great tool for coaches at both the middle school and high school levels, and will help build your players confidence on the offensive end of the field.

Build your team's defense with Tina McDavitt's proven-successful strategies and drills. In this video Coach McDavitt shares the defensive strategies she uses for her team and the drills she uses to develop her players and to effectively implement her defensive strategy.

Coach McDavitt teaches and demonstrates:

  • Defensive Strategies using Diamond and Triangle Defense. The Diamond Defense is difficult for attackers to penetrate, as the defending team is covering most angles.
  • The importance of getting numbers behind the ball. When under attack, your team must gain possession. You can do so by dropping back and helping defenders to win the ball.
  • Drills to force attackers toward less dangerous space and to tackle the ball carrier.
  • When to mark man-to-man vs zonal defense and when to use a combination of the two.

McDavitt gives a detailed explanation of each drill utilizing marker board diagrams and on-field demonstrations.

The tactics and strategies she describes are very effective, and can be used by coaches for their college, club or a mature high school team. In addition, players can use this video to understand the team and individual defensive skills needed to be successful.

Strategy can only be effective if the players have good basic skills, so McDavitt covers the fundamental skills and how every defender can practice.

These drills and strategies will give your team the tools to create a stingy, 'hard-to-penetrate' defense!

FHD-04281A: with Matt Soto,
Penn Manor (PA) High School Head Coach;
2x State Champions; 5x State Finalist; over 600 career victories

Matt Soto presents drills and exercises to strengthen your strikers' and midfielders' goal scoring abilities.

Using on-field demonstrators, Coach Soto presents over 25 practice drills that will strengthen both individual skills and develop your team's ability to control the ball and create more goal scoring opportunities.

Using his high school team, Soto shows how you can use basic skills like hits, pushes and aerial passes to get the ball to the attacking circle. He discusses important receiving skills and how to get the ball into an advantageous position for your attackers to score.

Practice is initiated with simple passing and trapping techniques. These are used as warm-up exercises to prepare players for what will be a challenging, technique-driven practice.

Each exercise builds on the last to further challenge your players' abilities. These carefully thought-out drills continue to develop until the players find themselves efficiently performing highly skilled ball handling drills in a game-like setting.

Throughout these progressions players practice how to fake, double pull, reverse stick techniques, purposely getting the ball into the air, and a number of other advanced skills to help them become better ball handlers. The difficulty of the drills continues as players are expected to move the ball purposefully to advance it down the field in a specifically choreographed manner.

Tipping drills will expose your players to advanced passing techniques that require the passer to "time" the runner as they move down the field together.

A key advantage to this DVD is the impact it will have not only on your individual players, but on your whole offensive unit.

The more advanced drills have the consistent element of getting a striker in position on the far side away from the goalie. By always working towards the far post, players develop their "field vision" and will find better positions on the field. The application of these drills in game situations provides the offense with confidence in knowing where their teammates positioning themselves. Therefore, these drills will provide increased scoring opportunities for the entire team.

Each evolution of drills is presented with clear and well defined expectations that will challenge even experienced players to elevate their standards to meet a higher level of expectations. There are a number of drills described in the video that can be used by players in individual practice while others must be practiced in a group setting.

This video has a wealth of drills you can use to develop your high school players into effective strikers and midfielders. The drill variations will keep your players engaged in working on and improving their skills.

FHD-04281B: with Matt Soto,
Penn Manor (PA) High School Head Coach;
2x State Champions; 5x State Finalist; over 600 career victories

Two-time state champion Matt Soto presents drills and exercises designed specifically to strengthen the abilities a goalkeeper.

Coach Soto has designed this progression of drills to continuously build the skills needed to perform the next drill in the series. By practicing these exercises and focusing on the details that Soto stresses, any goalie will improve their ability to keep the ball out of their net

Using on-field demonstration, Coach Soto presents practice drills covering footwork, body positioning and stance that will help your keepers stop shots from various angles and heights. In this DVD you will learn:

  • Pre-practice warm up exercises
  • Lunging and diving techniques
  • Clearing drills
  • Defending against multiple shooters
  • 1 vs 1 breakaway techniques

Practice is initiated with warm-ups structured to reinforce the goalie skill using correct footwork in an effort to properly position the goalie for lunging and stepping into the ball. Warm-ups start with players kicking the ball to each other. Correct foot position and striking the ball with a controlled, deliberate clearing kick is emphasized.

Moving into shooting on goal, the tempo and skill set builds from simply stopping the ball to clearing the ball to a specific area of the field. Players are shown how to clear the ball after a shot and to direct the ball away from the center of the field to the outside of the shooting circle. Goalies who are able to master the techniques shown will effectively decrease their opponents scoring opportunities.

Coach Soto introduces cones that the goalie must move through before stopping shots. This increases the challenge to the goalie and helps them build confidence in their footwork. Soon the drills develop to include shots from two shooters. The drill is structured to force the goalie to quickly move from one side of the net to the other.

All of the drills shown are strictly defined as goalie drills, therefore all shooting is performed to build a goalie-specific skill.

The drills continue to progress by using several players shooting from multiple spots on the field. The goalie must be able to quickly react to the ball, set in a good athletic stance and successfully clear the ball.

Additionally, this DVD provides clearly defined instruction for defending against a break away and 1-on-1 situations.

Whether you are a high school goal keeping coach, a parent helping your young athlete, or a goalkeeper taking charge of improving your skills, the drills in this video will teach you how to achieve your goals.

Shiv Jagday Skills and Drills for Field Hockey 2-Pack

FHD-04781A: with Shiv Jagday, FIH accredited coach;
former Canadian and USA national team coach, coaching national teams in the Olympic Games, World Cups and the Pan Am Games

I feel that the content of these video provides very valuable information for the coaches of young and developing hockey players in some very core skill areas. They provide not only excellent technical information but also valuable guidelines for coaches on how to develop various skills in their players.

I recommend these videos to any coach or player who wants to learn more about skill development in hockey and improving themselves."

FHD-04781B: with Shiv Jagday, FIH accredited coach;
former Canadian and USA national team coach, coaching national teams in the Olympic Games, World Cups and the Pan Am Games

"Shiv Jagday is widely regarded as one of the best hockey skills coaches in the world, with over 40 years of experience at all levels from beginning juniors to Olympians.

In his inimitable style of friendly interaction with his pupils, Shiv outlines the basic purpose of the exercise, identifies the fundamental elements involved, explains clearly the techniques required, and demonstrates each component thoroughly before guiding his pupils step-by-step through the drills devised to learn and practise the skills.

At each stage, Shiv points out how and why there is a breakdown in its execution, gently encouraging the players to try again and then providing positive reinforcement to the players with accolades for success in mastering the skill.

Shiv also cleverly integrates into the instructional video examples of competent and experienced players executing the defensive tackle in a dynamic situation.

Whilst the video is intended primarily to introduce the skill at the beginning and intermediate levels, many a top player could pick up tips to enhance their own game.

former member of the U.S. Senior National Team (2006 World Cup & 2008 Olympics); All-American at Maryland

University of Maryland Head Coach Missy Meharg, long known as a powerhouse in NCAA women's field hockey, presents a new approach to indoor training that will help prepare your team for the upcoming season.

Fundamental Skill Stations

"The pace of field hockey has increased so much that technique has suffered and unforced errors have increased." - Coach Missy Meharg

In response to this trend, Coach Meharg and her staff have developed a three-station technical circuit that focuses on developing the core skills and cognitive focus needed for players to be successful.

The Physio Station consists of five fundamental skill exercises where players execute skills in a high physiological load rate. Athletes will be able to reduce the amount of unforced errors while maintaining speed with skill accuracy. The stations include:

  • Ball, Body, Goalkeeper
  • Tackling
  • Drop Step and Channel Defense
  • Sweeping
  • Aerial Ball

Players are filmed to review their skills for correction and refinement. They will then repeat the drills, applying the noted corrections to strengthen their fundamentals and decrease the time it takes to move through the drills.

The second station reinforces the necessary mechanics for ball control. There are 100 ball control skills to work on in three segments that increase stick skill speed vital to on-ball field awareness and 1v1 elimination skills.

Coach Dina Rizzo takes the players through the third station, Skills and Tactics. You'll see a 4v2 Possession game that works on receiving, passing, vision and ball control. Other drills include Short Passing to Goal and 5v2 Full Court.

Progressive Numbers Game

The circuit training evolves into intense progressive games that work on both skill enhancement and endurance. The coaching staff takes the skills worked on in the three parts of the technical circuit training and puts them together into a tactical progression numbers team game. The concept of transitioning from defense to offense using movement and communication is the focus.

Yoga for Field Hockey

The team trains with yoga instructor Jessie Hill, a former University of Maryland Track & Field Athlete. Yoga helps maximize individual balance, flexibility and strength in field hockey-specific movements. The yoga is not only used for improving bodies, but also teaches how to relax and perform under mental stress.

Coach Meharg helps you to structure an indoor program designed to get the most out of your players - both physically and mentally.

Goalies who are able to defend the second shots are an asset at any level of play. The ability to be set and ready for subsequent shots and use the glove and the stick is a skill necessary for success. Using a progression of clearing drills, Joppe de Vries takes you through how to make sure your goalie is set, balanced and ready to make not only the initial save, but then make a second and third save as well.

Learn how to teach your goalie to grip their stick to prevent any deflections into their own goal and how to make a reverse stick stop. Along with positioning and proper grip, you will learn more advanced skills such as a one-legged stack and how to prevent goals from being scored in the most dangerous part of the circle. Last but not least, you'll learn creative drills to help your goalie focus on the ball in a crowed circle and how to prepare to make saves on multiple shot attempts on the ground and in the air.

Ready Position

Knowing where to stand in the goal varies from goalie to goalie due to their size. Coach de Vries discusses the goalie ready position and how to grip the stick. You'll learn how to determine where your goalie should stand to make the best saves, how to be set for different angled shots, and how to position your goalie to stay balanced so they are ready for anything. Coach de Vries gives detailed examples of correct and incorrect form so you can see how the differences can impact play.

Footwork and Glove Saves

Coach de Vries shows you multiple drills to get your goalie's feet ready to take on different shots. He also discusses the appropriate way to make gloves saves. The difference in footwork when goalies are clearing, especially near the mouth of the goal, is additionally covered.

With his progressive drill segment, Coach De Vries demonstrates how to make a basic clear with the kick, then progresses to a kick save and stick save, ending with a foot, stick and glove save.

Coach de Vries shares a multitude of training tools to help your goalie react to unknown situations. You'll learn how to have your goalie react to aerial shots, bouncing shots, flat shot and much more. With fun and innovative drills and exercises, you will have a variety of tools to keep your goalie working on the fundamentals.

"Most of the Goalie training videos I have seen don't make it simple and straightforward. (Joppe De Vries) makes coaching a goalie seem less intimidating. His use of basic concepts as a starting point makes this a must have for any coach." - Customer Review

with Ole Keusgen, University of Virginia Assistant Coach; member of the German National Team, winning a bronze medal at the 2013 World University Games in Kazan

Learn how to develop training exercises that will challenge your team and get them prepared for the season ahead! This video will provide everything your program needs to take the next step, including practice drills, goaltending instruction, drag flick strategies and more!

Competitive Drills and Games

As field hockey is a dynamic sport using many different muscle groups, Coach Madison begins with a few of her favorite practice drills to warm-up your squad properly. These drills will:

  • Reinforce the importance of communication between teammates as you sustain an attack
  • Demonstrate the importance of footwork in small, confined spaces and in tight situations
  • Allow your team to refine ball skills while maintaining shape and balance

Stick Handling Keys to Success

You'll learn drills to help athletes maintain control of the ball while maneuvering, change direction when receiving passes, master a roll-out when engaged with a defender, and more! You'll also see exercises to develop your transition game. Included are drills to build the attack using 2v1 tactical concepts, as well as games to open up the depth and width of the field to create space for greater attack opportunities.

Elevate Your Game with the Drag Flick

The Drag Flick has become a more potent scoring weapon on penalty corners because of the possible options from the drag. The best drag flickers are deceptive and can actually place the ball in all four corners of the goal, which is difficult for the goalkeeper to save.

Coach Ole Keusgen breaks down the steps to execute a drag flick. Hand placement on the stick for a powerful snap and the correct three step approach and follow-through when drag flicking for more control are covered.

Progressive Drills for Goalkeepers

Coach Keusgen shows multiple drills on how to go from basic one shot saves to multi-shot saves while incorporating stick saves and board and rebound training. All drills showcase game-like scenarios that will help prepare your goalie for the unpredictable game of field hockey.

This `Open Practice' video will provide you with drills and techniques that you can implement immediately to improve your team!

Goalkeeping Progressions for the Modern Day Goalkeeper

with Maureen Ordnung,
Ithaca College Assistant Coach;
2015 Empire 8 Conference Coaching Staff of the Year;
2x All Conference Goalkeeper at East Stroudsburg University

As field hockey continues to evolve, the challenges keepers face keep getting harder and harder. The strikers are faster, more aggressive, and hit harder than ever before. All this means less time for keepers to react. In this video, Maureen Ordnung shows how to equip your keeper with the physical and mental skills needed to face those challenges bravely and react intelligently.

The Theory of Keeping

Many people think keeping is simple - see the ball, stop the ball. But any keeper will tell you that's not true. Keeping is a specialized role, and one that many coaches who come from the field just don't feel equipped to coach well. As a result, their teams 'leak' too many goals and their keepers feel left out of practices that don't meet their needs.

Coach Ordnung shows how to break this cycle and teach keepers:

  • Footwork patterns for maximum efficiency in the circle.
  • To position themselves properly to find the line of the shot and then apply pressure on the shooter.
  • To identify space for safe clearances.

Using All the Tools

Ordnung shows you how to save and clear shots with kickers, pads, gloves, and sticks, and, as importantly, when to use each piece of equipment. No longer will your keeper be unsure if they should (or could) use their feet to make a save. No longer will your keeper lunge with their kicker when they should dive. Your keepers will have the confidence to pick off a flick into the corner with their stick instead of flailing with their glove.

The Importance of Aggression for a Keeper

Learn how to train your keepers to stay aggressive and communicate effectively. Ordnung presents a two-keeper, two-player drill designed to make strikers fear your keeper. This drill gets a keeper out of their cage to put pressure on ball carriers. In this beautifully simple drill, all the skills Ordnung emphasizes in the video are brought to life in a fun and challenging situation. Keepers and players will love it - and learn at the same time.

You'll also see Ordnung give practical advice on various coaching aids and how to use them. She demonstrates how to use paper plates, cones, and marker dots as visual cues to help your keepers learn proper positioning and shows how to use string to teach the concept of angles.

In clear and direct terms, Coach Ordnung gives you everything you need to increase the skill and confidence of your keepers and improve results immediately!

featuring Shiv Jagday,
FIH accredited coach;
former Canadian and USA national team coach, coaching national teams in the Olympic Games, World Cups and the Pan Am Games

In recent years, field hockey has become more and more of a power game. As such, some of the subtlety and beauty has gone out of the game. In this video, you'll learn how to recapture that beauty as Shiv Jagday zeros in on some overlooked skills and ideas that can raise your players to the next level.

Coach Jagday gives you fundamental offensive strategies and tactics, based upon proven principles. These principles are illustrated with specific game situation examples taken from the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games, plus other international tournaments. You will clearly see the rewards when these principles are honored diligently, as well as the penalties when they are not.

The Theory of the Game

Hockey is a simple game. But, the number of tactics and strategies is almost endless. Coach Jagday begins by revealing the core offensive principles that you need to focus on to win more games. In this section, you will learn about:

  • The importance of shape when attacking
  • The importance of space awareness when attacking
  • The Seven Laws of the Game
  • Types of attacks you can run
  • How to anticipate various defensive strategies

The Importance of Footwork and Stance

Players from the Punjab Institute of Sport demonstrate how to pass and receive the ball correctly in the midfield triangle. Jagday emphasizes the importance of correct footwork and stance to the performance of fundamental skills while demonstrating how to give precise corrective feedback to athletes.

To this midfield triangle, Jagday progressively adds more players while focusing on the basics of footwork and stance, as well of the core attacking principles of width, depth, support and penetration. He also shows how to use opposition to a drill to add an element of pressure.

Game Sense and How to Coach It

You'll learn how to use mini games to develop game sense and teach complex ideas. Jagday shows how to use simple games like 3v1, 3v2, 4v2, 4v3 and 4v4 to improve your players' ability to read the play in front of them and develop effective patterns of play.

He stresses the importance of:

  • Scanning to see the forward passes before the ball arrives
  • Correct leading patterns and timing to make the most of the attacking space
  • Giving early penetrating passes

Space Awareness

Coach Jagday demonstrates the importance of space awareness to effectively exploit defenses. He uses a 5v1 situation to teach the power of overlapping and freezing up defenders in 2v1 situations to create quick attacks.

Teams Within Teams

You'll see Coach Jagday use a coaching board to walk you through the mini teams within a field hockey team and the roles and responsibilities of:

  • The back four
  • The midfield triangle
  • The forwards
  • The right and left side triangles

You will also learn how to build various types of attack and how to manipulate defenses to create attacking opportunities.

As Coach Jagday says, "little things make big things happens." This video will show you how to make more big things happen by zeroing in on the little things that are often overlooked.
